Karen, Karenni and Hakha Chin are three distinct Burmese-ethnic languages spoken by different ethnic groups in Myanmar. Karen (Kayin) is spoken by the Karen people of Karen State in eastern Myanmar and along the Thailand-Burma border. Karenni (Kayah / Kayaw) is a closely related but distinct language spoken by the Karenni / Kayah people in Kayah State, just north of Karen State. Hakha Chin is a Chin language spoken by the Chin people of Chin State in northwestern Myanmar — a separate ethnic group, distant geographically and linguistically. Day Translations assigns separate native linguist teams for each language and never substitutes one for another.

S'gaw Karen is the most widely spoken and written variety of Karen and is the default for almost all professional translation work, including refugee resettlement, healthcare, education and immigration. Other Karen varieties — Pwo Karen, Pa'O, Bwe Karen — are spoken by smaller communities and are typically not mutually intelligible with S'gaw. S'gaw Karen has its own script (an adaptation of the Burmese / Mon script with additional characters), although Romanized variants are also in active use, particularly for digital communication and education. The largest US Karen communities are in St. Paul (Minnesota), Phoenix (Arizona), Utica (New York), Buffalo, Omaha (Nebraska), Indianapolis, Des Moines (Iowa), Albany (Georgia) and Salt Lake City. St. Paul alone has over 20,000 Karen residents and is home to the Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM), the largest Karen mutual-assistance association in the United States. These communities were primarily resettled from Mae La, Umpiem, Nu Po and other Thailand-Burma border refugee camps starting in 2005.

A substantial Karen Christian community — primarily Baptist, dating to 19th-century American Baptist missionary work — is concentrated in the Karen diaspora and parts of Karen State. Karen Buddhists are the majority within Myanmar. Karen Animist traditions also continue in some communities. The Karen Baptist Convention is a major community institution in the United States, and church life is central to social organization in many US Karen communities.
